Hydrotherapy History
Hydrotherapy is a natural method of using water pressure and temperature to promote wellness and healing, dating back to ancient Greece. The Romans built outstanding communal baths because they believed in the value of hot springs and water therapy. In Europe, where hydrotherapy is especially popular, there are numerous health spas utilizing water therapy, often prescribed by doctors to return people to health.

The word SPA comes from the Latin “Salus per Aquam’ meaning healing through water. At Simply Wellness Day Spa Retreat we utilize the many benefits of Hydrotherapy to help you heal and improve your Life Quality.

Benefits of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy treatments improve your life quality by producing a large increase in blood and lymph circulation, strengthening your immune system, improving your metabolism and detoxifying your body.  During hydrotherapy treatments your skin is also able to absorb our active marine, mineral and aromatherapy extracts. This compliments our hydrotherapy treatments and provides increased body mineral levels, energizing your body and leaving you recharged and tranquil.

Hydrotherapy has the following general effects on your body:

  • Dramatically increase your elimination of waste assisting detoxification
  • Loosen tense, tight muscles and encourage your relaxation
  • Increase your metabolic rate and digestion activity
  • Hydrates your cells improving skin and muscle tone
  • Boosts your immune system allowing it to function more efficiently
  • Improve the function of your internal organs by stimulating their blood supply

Hydrotherapy gives your body valuable time to return to balance, improving its functions, decreasing the effects of stress and allowing you to return to optimum health. To improve your life quality we recommend you have regular treatments every 2 to 8 weeks, depending on your general and specific conditions.

 Hydrotherapy Treatments
Our Day Spa provides you with a choice of Hydrotherapy Spa Baths, Dry Hydrotherapy or Heated Hydrotherapy Pool. Our hydrotherapy treatments are complemented by our other day spa treatments including body scrubs & wraps, Massage and skin treatments, designed to increase the therapeutic effects of Hydrotherapy. We respect your personal privacy and ensure your comfort. We have separate change rooms and gowns for your comfort. We request you bring your swimming costume to use during the hydrotherapy treatment.

As hydrotherapy increases metabolism and elimination, we recommend you drink pure water after your treatment. We have water fountains supplying water for your use, purified by our five-stage reverse osmosis filtration, or we have Alkaline water to purchase. The importance of drinking adequate water on a regular basis cannot be over emphasised. Your body is composed of around 70% water and is used in many normal body functions. In general we need to consume 2 - 4 liters of water each day. To hydrate your body effectively water must be taken slowly throughout the day, not in large volumes.

If you have high or low blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, compromised circulation or are pregnant, please consult your doctor before using any hydrotherapy treatment.

 Hydrotherapy Spa Baths
Our purpose-designed Hydrotherapy Spa Baths incorporate thirty-eight water & air jets strategically arranged to apply water pressure on areas of muscle to effectively stimulate blood flow. The spa bath is filled specifically for you, prior to your treatment. Afterwards it is drained, the water jet piping is sterilised with Ozone and air-dried. This ensures the water used for your treatment is hygienic and does not contain oppressive sterilisers like chlorine. We add active ingredients to the spa water, depending on your specific requirements to enhance, through osmosis the therapeutic effects of the hydrotherapy treatment. These include salts, algae and aromatherapy additives.

During your Hydrotherapy Spa Bath treatment you will be immersed for a maximum of 20 minutes. As the hydrotherapy spa lowers your blood pressure, our therapist will monitor you throughout your treatment, and reduce the water movement or treatment duration if you become light-headed or uncomfortable.

Specific benefits from regular hydrotherapy spa treatments include:

  • Relieving your general muscle tension and tiredness
  • Dramatically improving your elimination of toxins
  • Boosting your immune system
  • Nourishing your body through your skin, improving skin and muscle tone
  • Producing a general feeling of well-being

Heated Hydrotherapy Pool
Our purpose-designed heated hydrotherapy pool is extremely popular with clients that appreciate the 33 degrees heated water environment for gentle exercise, stretching, stress reduction and sports recovery.

Clients that have limited balance appreciate the gently sloping ramp and handrail to gain access to the pool. The ramp also makes the pool accessible for wheelchair bound clients who thoroughly enjoyed the freedom the heated pool gives them. The Canberra Raiders also use the heated pool for their after game recovery sessions, and it is proving excellent for after sport recovery.

Many of our clients have mentioned the increased energy they felt from higher levels of Oxygen in the water as a result of our unique sanitising system. Our pool uses a combination of Hydrogen Peroxide and Ultraviolet light. This reduces the irritating effects of chlorine and improves the healing aspects of the water.

In the photo of our plant room, you can see the green pipe on the middle on the left which brings water from the pool first passing through the high volume filter, then via the blue pipe exiting the top of the filter then entering a metal UV light chamber located high on the wall to the top right.

In the chamber some of the Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is changed into very active Hydroxyl radicals (OH-) by the action of UV. The short-lived Hydroxyl radicals quickly kill organic organisms in the water, aided also by the action of UV radiation. Unused Hydroxyl radicals then combine into water (H2O) and Oxygen (O2), producing increased Oxygen levels in the cleaned water returning to the pool via the blue pipe at the top of the UV chamber.
